RETIREMENT MIGRATION IN EUROPE 1998

The University of Leeds, U.K., in collaboration with Mrs. A. Petroglou, lawyer, and researchers from SEXTANT Co. undertook this research project whose aims were concerned with mapping the extent and geography of Retirement Migration in the European union. This involved

  • detailing the formal legal status of E.U citizens who migrate on retirement
  • assessing formal entitlements in the country of origin
  • evaluating the scope and nature of domestic welfare provision
  • evaluating the impact of retirement migration on local economies and welfare systems
  • examining the characteristics and experiences of retirement migrants and the material impact of the law.

The Greek project was carried out in the island of Corfu where many Retired Migrants are concentrated. Details from Dr. E. Ioannidi-Kapolou.

VIETNAMESE REFUGEE INTEGRATION IN GREECE 1998

SEXTANT members, Dr.E.Mestheneos and Dr.E.Ioannidi-Kapolou completed a qualitative research study on the integration of the approximately 300 Vietnamese who settled in Greece from 1979.The Greek Council for Refugees, within the context of its work on the Task Force for Integration, commissioned this study since the Vietnamese are the only refugees given work and residence rights by the Greek state from the moment of their arrival. The research was based on semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Results indicate that after a hard initial struggle, many in this refugee group have managed to own their businesses and to integrate socially with Greek society. However, the lack of rights to citizenship after almost 20 years of residence, is the major barrier to full integration into Greek society.
