SOSTRIS 1996-1999

In the context of the Targeted Social and Economic Research 4th Framework Programme, E.C. DG XII Dr.E.Mestheneos and Dr.E.Ioannidi-Kapolou completed work on the collaborative sociological research project SOSTRIS "Social Strategies in Risk Societies", with the Department of Sociology, University of East London, UK (the research coordinators), the Martin Luther Universitat, Halle (Germany), Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain, ITER srl, Naples (Italy), Universite Paris 7, France, and Goeteborgs Universitet, Sweden. The researchers use biographical-interpretive methods to explore the life courses of persons who appear to be at risk of social exclusion by virtue of their unemployed, marital or ethnic minority status, examining the personal and social strategies that are open to them in their life courses. The research also examined flagship projects in each country that dealt with specific aspects of social exclusion, looking at the degree to which they are able to empower and develop individual's life strategies.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONGST STUDENTS 1998

The Technological Institute of Athens in collaboration with SEXTANT Group carried out a pilot qualitative research on the use of substances (drugs, alcohol, nicotine) in the student population. With the use of the Biographical - Interpretive method the researchers identified the main themes on which a questionnaire was constructed to be used in a future quantitative study of the same population. EURO-VOLUNTEERING ON THE INTERNET 1998

In collaboration with the Hellenic Red Cross a project was completed, organised by BAGSO Europe (Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Senioren-Organisationen), to develop the resources of NGOs who use and depend upon volunteers. Termed the "European Information Pool and Discussion Forum on the Internet relating to issues of voluntary work in NGOs" and funded by EC DGV it has set up a pilot Website for NGOs where they can exchange information particularly focused on training and development in voluntary work. Dr.E.Mestheneos coordinated the research aspect of the work in Greece.

SUPPORTING THE ALBANIAN NGOS FOR HEALTH 1996

Dr.E.Mestheneos acted as Research Consultancy to the National School for Public Health, in collaboration with Prof.J.Levett and E.Petsetakis of the Department of Health Service Management, on a PHARE project in Albania designed to strengthen and encourage the work of Albanian specific NGOs for Health, including the National Association of Hygienists and the Albanian NGO Forum (spahiu@angof.tirana.al) and the National Institute for Public Health, Albania. PARENTS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS SEX EDUCATION 1996-7

A small pilot study was conducted on the prospects for the introduction of sex education in the school curriculum, and financed by the Centre for Infectious Diseases, Greece. Details from Dr.E.Ioannidi-Kapolou or C.Tselepi.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES ON AIDS PREVENTION 1996

A qualitative research study aiming at investigating young people's attitudes was carried out by Dr.E.Ioannidi-Kapolou, based on the Theory of Social Representations and examining the way young people perceive sexual behaviour in the era of AIDS. CONSENSUS PROGRAMME, COUNTRY POLICY PAPER - ALBANIA ON SOCIAL SECURITY 1996

PHARE Project, E.C. DG. I. Dr.G.Amitsis and Dr.E.Mestheneos were in charge of the implementation of a PHARE-Consensus Project by Sextant concerning the drafting of a Country Policy Paper on the Albanian Social Security System. Brief research was undertaken in order to fulfil the objectives of this project related to the description of social insurance and assistance schemes, identification of shortcomings and gaps and design of reform proposals.

CAREER GUIDANCE SERVICE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF CRETE 1994

Dr.E.Kourti and Dr.E.Mestheneos prepared the materials to aid students in approaching the labour market for the Career Office of the University of Crete. Subsequently they wrote a self-help book for Greek young people on aspects of looking for employment: "Looking for Work: Communication Techniques".

EVALUATION OF THE GREEK STATE FAMILY PLANNING CLINICS 1992

A study undertaken by Dr.V.Margaritidou and Dr.E. Mestheneos on the Greek Family Planning Association and the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Findings indicated not only the very limited national coverage by family planning clinics, but also the limited nature of their work in family planning.
